IT has exactly been two years since I graduated from college in electronics and communications engineering. Unfortunately, I had not passed the licensure examination. In between reviewing for the board and waiting for the results of the licensure examination, I had discovered one passion that is innate in me – watching movies. That had just been at the back of my mind but when I failed the board examination; I soon realized it was a career calling for me. Thus, I enrolled back at the University for a one-semester Crash Course in being a film critic. And I like it. And now, I’m employed as an assistant to movie critic Richard Roeper at the Chicago Sun-Times.
The first movie that I’ll be critiquing is The Bucket List. The Bucket List is actually a list of things to do by a person on a given period. In this movie, the owner of the bucket list is the character played by Morgan Freeman. Morgan Freeman has been in a lot of miscast roles recently but as always, he plays those roles in a very dignified manner. I mean, Morgan Freeman’s character is painfully dying of cancer and he still has the ego to tour around the world. This is Rob Reiner’s worst movie.
The second movie I would like to discuss is The Spiderwick Chronicles. The film is another Disney cliché but don’t just watch the movie as a movie itself. You must appreciate that the director of this movie is the same director who gave us Freaky Friday when Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis switch characters. That was a real screwball comedy but with this movie, the director has succeeded in making a children’s film. I also liked James Horner’s score in this movie. James Horner has been known to score such heavy drama as Titanic. Here in The Spiderwick Chronicles, he’s adjusting his musical prowess to be palatable to children’s ears.
Another movie heavily investing on music is August Rush. The composer here is Frank Mancina but here’s another bit of trivia for you. This is starred once again by Freddie Highmore, the child actor prodigy from The Spiderwick Chronicles who was first discovered in Finding Neverland. This is Freddie Highmore’s best performance yet. Of course, directed by Marc Forster, Finding Neverland, is one of the best movies ever.
This is the perfect time to look into such activity - did you know the Cannes film festival is on at the moment? Even the cartoon films (such as Angelina Jolie’s Kung Fu Panda) are turning out to be big hits - so get yourself down to the agencia de viajes now and book your french flight!

THE road to success starts from high school without a doubt. Even if your family is not well-off and you are sure right now that your parents or guardian cannot send you to college, do not make it a worry or a hindrance for success ahead. For sometime between your high school and college days, you will receive payback later on. Just trust the situation that you are in. As long as you are working for some kind of academic achievement in high school, you will eventually succeed in the end.
Achievement in high school isn’t just measured through academic grades. First, there are extra-curricular activities that you can excel in. Let’s say for instance that you have known playing ice hockey since you were a kid. Even if you don’t excel in such fields as English or geometry, if you are a member of your high school’s hockey team and your team eventually won in the regionals, then that will be a great honor for you and your high school team. Your principal will even commend you personally and make sure that you get off to college on an athletic scholarship. Once in college, you can even jump your way to becoming an NHL player.
Actually, I’m a member of the college admissions staff of the Laredo Community College here in Texas. As a community college, we are dead serious in admitting students to our campus because we only admit students who are really committed to get work with the business community here in Laredo. After all, Laredo is populated with lots of investments in diverse areas because it is a gateway to the United States from Mexico. And Laredo Community College where I work is subsidized by the city government so we are only intent on enrolling students who are serious in their studies.
Last year, there was one stage play that I attended. It was called The Lost Princess and the story was all about Anastasia’s supposed escape from the 1918 murder of the Tsarist family of Russia. I was impressed with the performance of the lead actress who played Anastasia that I subsequently called up the principal of the high school organizing the play. The girl, Erin Segovia, has now a slot at the Laredo Community College. She says she will be taking up a bachelor’s degree leading to becoming a flight stewardess. If all her plans will go well, she will surely be the real example of the lead character in the movie Woman on Top which starred Gwyneth Paltrow.
Erin’s case is one perfect example that it’s not just in academics that you will shine. I browsed up Erin’s academic performance and true enough; she is not doing well in science subjects such as physics and chemistry. But she’s good in oratory and I can see that she is really determined to become successful. She’s really worth emulating indeed.
